Not sure which type of boat best suits your needs?

As a new sailor, it can be difficult to decide which type of boat will best suit your maritime lifestyle. That's why we've put together a short guide to choosing between sailboats and motorboats.

Thinking about buying a boat?

We've compiled a list of what you should be aware of and consider before you buy the boat of your dreams.

  • What type of sailing do you plan to do? Will it be day trips, weekend trips, longer cruises or fishing?
  • Where do you want to sail? At sea, in rivers, lakes or canals.
  • How many people should the boat comfortably accommodate?
    • A larger boat can offer more comfort and space, but also requires more maintenance and is more expensive to run.
  • Choose from powerboats, sailboats, catamarans, pontoon boats, etc. depending on your needs and preferences.
  • Are there any specific certificates or licenses required to sail the boat you want?
  • Set a realistic budget that includes purchase price, insurance, maintenance, fuel, storage and possible berths.
    • Consider financing options if you're not paying cash.
  • How much time and money are you willing to spend on maintenance?
    • Consider the age and condition of the boat.
  • Investigate costs for fuel, insurance, berths and possible winter storage.
  • What safety equipment is needed and is it included in the purchase?

Other good advice:

  • It's always a good idea to have your boat inspected by a professional boat inspector to avoid hidden problems.
  • Take the boat out for a test drive to make sure it lives up to your expectations.
  • Make sure all necessary documentation is in order, including ownership certificates, service history and registration papers.
  • Consider the resale value and market attractiveness of the boat if you plan to upgrade in the future.
  • Is the boat easy to upgrade with new features and equipment?
